IBM watsonx.governance maps an organisation's AI systems, surfaces unmanaged and unapproved AI use, manages risk across the lifecycle and monitors AI systems for compliance and operational issues1.
Best for: Enterprises with their own models in production that need lifecycle risk management and monitoring, on IBM Cloud, AWS or their own servers.
Not the right fit for: Companies that only use off-the-shelf AI tools and want controls without a governance team.
What watsonx.governance does for an AI policy
IBM describes the product as "a living map of your AI ecosystem", with the ability to discover unmanaged and unapproved AI use and to act on risk signals in real time. It aligns AI work with frameworks including the NIST AI RMF and ISO 42001 and shows an EU AI Act logo, though the product page does not describe Act-specific features. Customers named on the page include Zurich Insurance Group, Infosys and Banco do Brasil1.
It is sold on IBM Cloud, on AWS and as self-managed software priced by virtual processor cores. IBM publishes starting prices, from $3,500 a month for Risk & Compliance Basic on IBM Cloud, and notes that prices vary by country2. For a company that keeps data in-house, the self-managed option matters.
Against our template, it serves clauses 5 and 15 for companies with model portfolios. The product page we read does not describe controls over individual agent actions.
